But why call it a Cookie?
But why call it a Cookie?
In the physical world, a cookie is something we eat…but in the computer world, a cookie is something to store information on.
How does this make any sense? What is the analogy?
This is what Sudip Bhandari and I were discussing a couple of days back during our creative (mostly bullshit) talk session.
After discussing, arguing and researching for a while we finally found our answer:
The concept of Cookie dates back to at least 1979. Before being called just Cookie, it was called a Magic cookie. The term Magic Cookie is derived from the concept of Fortune cookie. Back in the 1900s, it was something that people really enjoyed.
Fortune cookies are just like regular cookies, but with a piece of paper inside it called “fortune”, which usually contains a vague prophecy.
Hence, the term fortune cookie was a perfect name for a thing which is used for storing a small secret message on the computer. But, back then the computer was still a magic thing, so “why be a Fortune when you can be a Magic” right? (does that ring a bell? EMINEM fans leave a comment)
